Fractions are one of the first truly abstract concepts children encounter in math. Unlike whole numbers, which represent a count of things, fractions represent parts of a whole. This shift in thinking can be confusing — but with the right approach, it clicks.
What Is a Fraction?
A fraction is a way of expressing a part of something. The fraction 3/4 means "3 out of 4 equal parts." Think of a pizza cut into 4 slices — if you eat 3 of them, you've eaten 3/4 of the pizza.
Every fraction has two parts: the numerator (top number) tells you how many parts you have. The denominator (bottom number) tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Why Fractions Are Hard
Children struggle with fractions because they break the rules of whole numbers. When you multiply 2 × 3, you get 6 — a bigger number. But when you multiply 1/2 × 1/2, you get 1/4 — a smaller number. This feels wrong at first.
The key is helping children see fractions as numbers, not just "top and bottom." 1/2 is a number. 3/4 is a number. They live on the number line between 0 and 1.
When Fractions Appear in School
Grade 3: Students learn unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) and begin understanding that fractions represent parts of a whole.
Grade 4: Students compare fractions, find equivalence (1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6), and add/subtract fractions with like denominators.
Grade 5: Students multiply fractions and divide unit fractions by whole numbers.
Grades 6–8: Students work with rational numbers, convert between fractions/decimals/percents, and solve equations involving fractions.
