Helping Your Child Learn the New Math at Home

Why the "New Math" Looks Different — and How to Help Anyway

If your child's math homework looks nothing like the math you learned in school, you're not alone. The "new math" — more accurately the Common Core approach — teaches students to understand why math works, not just how to get an answer. It can look strange at first, but with the right mindset you can support your child without relearning everything.

What Is the "New Math" Anyway?

The old approach taught one method for each problem: memorize the steps, produce the answer. Common Core adds something extra: it asks students to explain their thinking and explore multiple strategies. A child might solve 25 + 17 by breaking it into 20 + 10 and 5 + 7, then adding the parts together. That way of "seeing" numbers builds flexible problem-solving that lasts.

Why It Can Look Confusing

You might see number lines, area models, or drawn boxes where you remember plain columns of numbers. These are visual tools that make abstract ideas concrete. They are not meant to replace the old way forever — they help children grasp the meaning behind the procedure. Once the understanding is solid, the standard algorithm usually follows.

Simple Ways to Help at Home

  • Ask your child to "teach" you. Let them walk you through their strategy. Explaining out loud is the fastest way to deepen understanding — and you learn alongside them.
  • Don't correct the method. If the answer is right, the method may be fine even if it's new to you. Focus on whether they can justify it, not on whether it matches your way.
  • Use everyday objects. Counters, coins, and snacks make number sense and place value tangible at home.
  • Model a positive attitude. Say "let's figure this out together" instead of "this is too confusing." Your curiosity becomes theirs.

When to Ask for Help

If your child can't explain a strategy or you're unsure the work is correct, that's a good moment to look it up together or ask the teacher. You don't have to be the expert — you just have to be present. Staying calm and curious is more valuable than knowing every method.
