The Surprising History of Math

From bone carvings to quantum computers.

Math is one of the oldest human activities. People have been counting, measuring, and proving things for at least 50,000 years. But the history of math is full of surprises — from who invented what to how ideas traveled across the world.

Before Numbers: Tally Marks and Bones

The earliest math tools weren't written on paper — they were carved into bone. The Ishango bone, found in Congo and dating back about 20,000 years, has grouped tally marks that suggest early humans understood counting and possibly even prime numbers.

Tally marks appeared independently across the world. A cave in Indonesia has carved lines dating back 50,000 years — the oldest known mathematical marks by humans.

Ancient Egypt and Babylon

The Egyptians developed a base-10 number system around 3000 BCE. They used hieroglyphs for numbers and could add, subtract, multiply, and divide. The Rhind Papyrus (1650 BCE) shows they could solve linear equations and calculate the area of circles — using pi ≈ 3.16, surprisingly close to the real value.

The Babylonians went further. They used a base-60 (sexagesimal) system — which is why we still have 60 seconds in a minute and 360 degrees in a circle. They could solve quadratic equations and even had tables of what we now call Pythagorean triples, over 1,000 years before Pythagoras.

The Greeks: Math Becomes Proof

Greek mathematicians changed everything by insisting on proof. Before the Greeks, math was practical — used for farming, trade, and construction. After the Greeks, math became a discipline where every claim had to be logically proven.

Thales of Miletus (624–546 BCE) is often called the first mathematician because he proved theorems from definitions. Pythagoras gave us the famous theorem (though Babylonians knew it earlier). Euclid's Elements, written around 300 BCE, was the standard math textbook for over 2,000 years.

Archimedes calculated pi to remarkable accuracy, discovered the principle of buoyancy, and invented war machines — all while being one of the greatest mathematical minds ever.

India: Zero and the Decimal System

Around 500 CE, Indian mathematicians gave the world two revolutionary ideas: the concept of zero as a number and the place-value decimal system we use today.

Aryabhata calculated pi to 3.1416 and proposed that the Earth rotates on its axis — 1,000 years before Copernicus. Brahmagupta wrote rules for arithmetic with zero and negative numbers. Without Indian mathematics, modern computing wouldn't exist.

The Islamic Golden Age

While Europe was in the Dark Ages, Islamic scholars preserved and advanced Greek and Indian mathematics. Al-Khwarizmi (780–850 CE) wrote the book that gave us the word "algorithm" and the word "algebra."

Al-Khwarizmi's system of solving equations was systematic and general — a huge leap from the specific tricks used before. Islamic mathematicians also developed trigonometry, advanced geometry, and early forms of calculus.

The Renaissance and Beyond

Fibonacci brought the Hindu-Arabic numeral system to Europe in 1202 through his book Liber Abaci. It took centuries to replace Roman numerals — some European cities didn't ban Roman numerals in books until the 1500s.

In the 1600s, Newton and Leibniz independently invented calculus, unlocking the ability to describe motion, change, and the physical world mathematically. Einstein used calculus to describe relativity. Today, math underlies everything from smartphones to GPS to artificial intelligence.

Math Today and Tomorrow

Math is still evolving. The Clay Mathematics Institute offers $1 million prizes for solving any of the seven Millennium Prize Problems — and only one has been solved so far (the Poincaré conjecture, by Grigori Perelman, who declined the money).

From ancient bone carvings to quantum computing, math has been humanity's most enduring and universal language. And it's still being written.
